Preview: Payson Longhorns vs. Winslow Bulldogs
Payson is 0-10 against Winslow since January of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Payson Longhorns will head out on the road to challenge the Winslow Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. Hopefully Payson focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Thursday.
Even though Payson has not done well against Blue Ridge recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way. Payson managed a 43-38 victory over Blue Ridge. The win was all the more spectacular given Payson's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 73rd, while Blue Ridge is ranked 20th).
Lizzy White was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds. White is absolutely dominating the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Clara Whaley, who scored nine points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Meanwhile, Winslow's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their sixth straight loss. They took a hard 56-37 fall against Pusch Ridge Christian Academy.
Payson is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-6 record this season. As for Winslow, they bumped their record down to 4-14 with that defeat, which was their third straight on the road.
Payson was dealt a bruising 66-36 loss at the hands of Winslow in their previous matchup back in February of 2023. Thankfully for Payson, Shaelene Singer (who scored 21 points along with five rebounds and five steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
