Softball Game Preview: Cowan Blackhawks vs. Monroe Central Golden Bears

The Cowan Blackhawks will head out on the road to challenge the Monroe Central Golden Bears at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Cowan will be strutting in after a victory while Monroe Central will be coming in after a defeat.

Cowan came out on top against Cambridge City Lincoln on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run third inning. The Blackhawks walked away with a 6-2 win over the Golden Eagles.

Savannah Bowling made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Those stolen bases were her first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Candice Matson, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run. Bryleigh Hiatt also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, Monroe Central was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their ninth straight loss dating back to last season. They lost 15-5 to Yorktown. That's two games in a row now that the Golden Bears have lost by exactly ten runs.

Monroe Central saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aleiyah Davis, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI. Raegan Quattlebaum was another, earning two runs and three stolen bases.

Cowan is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 3-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Monroe Central, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-7.

Everything went Cowan's way against Monroe Central in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Cowan made off with a 10-2 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Blackhawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
