Softball Game Preview: Fountain Central Mustangs vs. Covington Trojans

The Fountain Central Mustangs will head out on the road to take on the Covington Trojans at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Fountain Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.

Fountain Central came out on top against North Vermillion on Saturday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run third inning. The Mustangs walked away with an 8-4 win over the Falcons. The victory was some much needed relief for the Mustangs as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Lillian Bennett spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on nine hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Kailey Daugherty was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Brealyn Brooker, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.

Meanwhile, Covington was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They came up short against Southmont, falling 20-4.

Covington saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Preslee Shaw, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Another was Alexus Peaslee, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with one run.

Covington's defeat dropped their record down to 3-9. As for Fountain Central, their win was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-7 and their overall record up to 4-9.

Fountain Central might still be hurting after the 15-9 loss they got from Covington in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Mustangs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
