Xavier Prep has gone 9-1 against Cathedral City recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. The Saints are taking a road trip to take on the Lions at 6:00 p.m. Xavier Prep's pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so Cathedral City's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Xavier Prep is headed into Wednesday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Tuesday. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 2-0 heartbreaker at the hands of Palm Desert. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Saints have suffered since March 28th.
Meanwhile, Cathedral City was not the first on the board last Thursday, but they got there more often. They came out on top against Desert Hot Springs by a score of 12-7. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Lions.
Moses Tinajero was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off nine hits. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ozzy Garcia, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.
Xavier Prep's defeat dropped their record down to 11-15. As for Cathedral City, their record now sits at 6-13.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Xavier Prep has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Cathedral City struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Xavier Prep took their victory against Cathedral City in their previous meeting back in February of 2023 by a conclusive 14-0 score. Will the Saints repeat their success, or do the Lions have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
