Softball Recap: Make It Six in a Row for Holy Cross

Holy Cross hadn't done well against Incarnate Word recently (they were 0-5 in their previous five matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Holy Cross Knights walked away with a 6-3 win over the Incarnate Word Shamrocks. Winning may never get old, but the Knights sure are getting used to it with their sixth in a row.

Haven Castillo was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and one double. That home run marked the first that she launched this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Leena Garcia, who scored a run while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Ariel Bosman was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.

Holy Cross hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most four strikeouts in five consecutive matchups.

Holy Cross' victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.6 runs on average over those games. As for Incarnate Word, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-8.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Holy Cross will square off against Incarnate Word Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Holy Cross' pitching crew has only allowed 2.3 runs per game this season, so Incarnate Word Academy's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Incarnate Word, they will face off against Antonian Prep at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Antonian Prep will roll in looking for their fifth straight win, something Incarnate Word surely won't give up without a fight.
