Soccer Game Preview: Canterbury vs. Mariner

The Canterbury Cougars will venture away from home to square off against the Mariner Tritons at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Canterbury is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 6.2 goals per game this season.

Canterbury is coming into the matchup fresh off a high-scoring shootout with Cardinal Gibbons that saw the pair combine for 20 shots on goal. Canterbury might have been a little too into the holiday spirit, gifting Cardinal Gibbons an easy 4-1 win. Having soared to a lofty eight goals in the game before, the Cougars couldn't push the score so high this time.

Their goal came courtesy of Alyssa LoGuercio, who's now up to 16 this season.

Meanwhile, Mariner waltzed into their contest on Saturday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They beat the Panthers by a goal, winning 2-1. Given the Tritons' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida soccer rankings (they are ranked 19th, while the Panthers are ranked 125th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Canterbury's loss dropped their record down to 11-2-1. As for Mariner, their victory bumped their record up to 13-1.

Canterbury took their win against Mariner when the teams last played back in January of 2021 by a conclusive 3-0. Will Canterbury repeat their success, or does Mariner have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
