Preview: Fleming Island Golden Eagles vs. St. Johns Country Day Spartans

Fleming Island has enjoyed a seven-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the St. Johns Country Day Spartans at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Fleming Island focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten on Wednesday.

Fleming Island suffered their biggest loss since December 22, 2023 on Wednesday. They had to suffer through a rough 63-31 loss at the hands of Ponte Vedra. Fleming Island was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 37-12.

The losing side was boosted by London Jenkins, who scored 15 points along with two steals. She has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last 11 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Victoria Noble, who scored eight points.

Meanwhile, St. Johns Country Day can now show off 14 landslide victories after their most recent matchup on Wednesday. They blew past Global Outreach Charter Academy 63-15 on the road. Given St. Johns Country Day's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 201st, while Global Outreach Charter Academy is ranked 583rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Kendall Proffitt and Mary Kate Kent were among the main playmakers for St. Johns Country Day as the former scored 18 points along with seven assists and seven steals and the latter went 7 for 11 from beyond the arc en route to 31 points and 6 assists. That makes it three consecutive games in which Kent has scored at least a third of St. Johns Country Day's points. Another player making a difference was Ashantii Williams, who scored five points along with eight rebounds and three steals.

Fleming Island's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-12. As for St. Johns Country Day, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season.

This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Fleming Island have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 25 rebounds per game. However, it's not like St. Johns Country Day struggles in that department as they've been averaging 30.5 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out. Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
