Baseball Game Preview: Corona del Sol Aztecs vs. Red Mountain Mountain Lions

The Corona del Sol Aztecs will face off against the Red Mountain Mountain Lions on Saturday. Corona del Sol is coming into the game hot, having won their last seven games.

Corona del Sol is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand O'Connor a 10-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Aztecs, who have now won 13 contests by six runs or more so far this season.

Meanwhile, Red Mountain faced Brophy College Prep in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Mountain Lions came out on top in a nail-biter against the Broncos, sneaking past 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Mountain Lions have posted since March 20th.

Drew Hanen looked comfortable as he tossed four innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Red Mountain saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kale Thorson, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Red Mountain has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games. As for Corona del Sol, their win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 23-5.

Corona del Sol suffered a grim 7-1 defeat to Red Mountain in their previous matchup back in February of 2024. Can the Aztecs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
