Basketball Game Preview: Newport Wildcats vs. Dixie Heights Colonels

The Newport Wildcats will challenge the Dixie Heights Colonels at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Newport is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 58.6 points per game this season.

Last Friday, Newport was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 47-43 to Covington Catholic. While the Wildcats didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Colonels 15-8 in the first quarter.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from DaShawn Anderson, who dropped a double-double with 12 points and ten boards. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in rebounds. Yamil Rondon was another key player, putting up 15 points.

Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led Dixie Heights over Bracken County in every quarter on their way to victory on Monday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Dixie Heights blew Bracken County out of the water with a 62-34 final score. The Colonels have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten games by 20 points or more this season.

Newport's loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-9. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 68.3 points over those games. As for Dixie Heights, they are on a roll lately: they've won 13 of their last 15 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season.

Everything came up roses for Newport against Dixie Heights when the teams last played back in December of 2023, as the squad secured a 53-24 win. In that contest, Newport amassed a halftime lead of 28-7, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Tuesday.
