Softball Game Preview: Calvin Cougars vs. Summerfield Rebels

Calvin is a perfect 3-0 against Summerfield since March of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Cougars will face off against the Rebels. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

12 must be Calvin's lucky number: they beat Harrisonburg with that score not once but twice on Saturday. The Cougars beat the Bulldogs by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 12-6. Winning may never get old, but the Cougars sure are getting used to it with their fourth in a row.

Haley Martin spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Kyleigh Blundell, who went 3-for-5 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. Those six RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kylianne Barnes, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Meanwhile, with a playoff win on the line, Summerfield rose to the challenge on Saturday. Everything went their way against the Bobcats as they made off with a 12-2 victory. The win continues a trend for the Rebels in their matchups with the Bobcats: they've now won three in a row.

Summerfield's victory bumped their record up to 15-8. As for Calvin, their win bumped their record up to 17-13.

Calvin took their victory against Summerfield in their previous meeting back in April of 2022 by a conclusive 10-0 score. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Rebels turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
