Basketball Recap: Covington Takes a Loss

Covington was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They took a 53-40 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Millington Central Trojans. While losing is never fun, the Chargers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee basketball rankings (they are ranked 305th, while the Trojans are ranked 137th).

Despite the loss, Covington saw an underclassman step up: sophomore TaKyra Boddie posted 11 points and eight rebounds. Boddie is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played.

Even though they lost, Covington smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in three consecutive matchups.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Millington Central to victory, but perhaps none more so than Arianna Whiten, who had eight points and five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaitlyn Holmes, who earned ten points along with six boards and five steals.

Covington's defeat dropped their record down to 4-11. As for Millington Central, they pushed their record up to 9-8 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home.

Covington wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 68-17 win against Brighton on the 7th. As for Millington Central, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 60-10 victory against Raleigh-Egypt on the 7th.
