Basketball Recap: Cheraw Proves Higher State Rank Is No Mistake

Cheraw's game on Friday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Saturday. They came out on top against the Scotland Fighting Scots by a score of 62-53. Given the Braves' advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 208th in South Carolina, while the Fighting Scots are ranked 538th in North Carolina), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

TJ Ford was his usual excellent self, going 6 for 11 on his way to 19 points. De'Shaun Drake was another key player, putting up 14 points and five rebounds.

Cheraw was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Despite the defeat, Scotland saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jerrison Dixon went 7 of 14 on his way to 22 points and five rebounds. That was a full 41.5% of Scotland's points, marking the third time in a row he's posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jesse Clifton, who had eight points and nine rebounds.

Cheraw's record now sits at 5-7. As for Scotland, their record is now 2-7.

Cheraw will square off against North Central at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Cheraw is facing North Central at the right time seeing as North Central is stuck on an eight-game losing streak. As for Scotland, they will take on Whiteville at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
