Basketball Game Preview: Calhoun Yellow Jackets vs. Northwest Whitfield Bruins

The Calhoun Yellow Jackets are taking a road trip to square off against the Northwest Whitfield Bruins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Calhoun is headed into the match after thoroughly thrashing Heritage: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Calhoun blew Heritage out of the water with a 75-39 final score. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 35-15.

Calhoun relied on the efforts of Blake Hammett, who went 6 for 10 on his way to 15 points in addition to eight rebounds and three steals, and Trey Perkins, who made all 7 shots he took to post 14 points and seven rebounds. That's the most points Hammett has posted since back in December of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Beau Kelly, who posted seven points.

Calhoun was working as a unit and finished the game with 22 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Northwest Whitfield strolled past Ridgeland with points to spare on Saturday, taking the game 72-58. Given the Bruins' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 179th, while the Panthers are ranked 483rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Northwest Whitfield's victory bumped their record up to 10-2. As for Calhoun, their win ended a seven-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-2.

Calhoun and Northwest Whitfield were neck-and-neck when the teams last played back in January of 2018, but Calhoun came up empty-handed after a 56-55 loss. Can Calhoun avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
