They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 44-41 win over the Effingham County Rebels. Given the Bears' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 24th, while the Rebels are ranked 116th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Houston County to victory, but perhaps none more so than Isaiah Mitchell, who picked up 232 receiving yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 14 yards and a touchdown while completing 100% of his passes. Mitchell was no stranger to the big play, lighting up the secondary with a catch that went for 50 yards. Another signal caller making a difference was Antwann Hill Jr, who threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 13.2 yards per attempt.

Effingham County's loss came despite strong showings from Tucker Perkins and Ryan Wells. Perkins threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 12.2 yards per attempt, while Wells picked up 203 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Kris Swinney got in on the action too, returning a kick for a touchdown.
Houston County's victory bumped their record up to 2-0.
