MaxPreps Baseball Xcellent 25: Moody Tops Calallen, Stays No. 1

Pearland, Capistrano Valley, Richland, Crown Point join rankings for first time.

The Trojans won the duel for No. 1 with previously No. 2-ranked Calallen to advance to the Texas 4A state tournament. Moody won the first game 6-3 before falling 6-2 in the second game. Rudy Flores and Justin Meza led a 14-4 rout in the finale with Flores belting a home run, triple and a double and Meza getting his 14th win of the season.

The Panthers’ season is over. As an independent school, Pendleton is not eligible for the Florida state playoffs.

The Monarchs bounced back from a loss to Cox in the Eastern Regional final to win three straight games and claim the Virginia AAA state title with a 7-1 win over Hanover. Menchville gave Hanover just its second loss of the season thanks mainly to a five-run first inning. Season complete.

The Oilers made it three wins over Brazoswood this year, winning the first game 1-0 and the second 11-8 to advance to the Texas 5A state tournament. Drew DeKerlegand and Josh Gonzales each had two-run homers for Pearland in the second game.

15. (NR) Capistrano Valley (Mission Viejo, Calif.), 27-6
Tyler Matzek came up big in his final two games, pitching seven innings in a 1-0 win over Riverside Poly in the semifinals and then pitching the final two innings and hitting a home run for the only run of the game in a 1-0 victory over Edison in the Southern Section Div. 1 finals. Capistrano Valley shut out all four of its playoff opponents and Matzek finished the season with a 13-1 record.

Brazoswood (Clute, Texas), 29-7
The Buccaneers were unable to maintain the momentum they established by knocking off No. 1 Bellaire the previous week, dropping two straight to Pearland 1-0 and 11-8 in the Texas 5A state playoffs. Season complete.

The Wildcats have lost five games this year, three of them to Moody. Calallen won the second game of the three-game series with Moody despite losing ace pitcher Jordan John with soreness in the elbow. The Wildcats gave up 10 runs in the first three innings on Saturday in being ousted by their crosstown rivals. Season complete.

The Bulldogs escaped with an 11-9 win over Concord in the first round as Brian Holloway had two triples and Scott Donley had one to propel Crown Point in to the semifinals against Lake Central. The Bulldogs easily won 15-8 to advance to the semifinals against Fort Wayne Snider.
