Football Recap: West Carteret Patriots vs. North Brunswick Scorpions

West Carteret kicked off their season on the road on Friday and hit a couple of potholes. They took a 41-23 bruising from the North Brunswick Scorpions. While losing is never fun, the Patriots can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 222nd, while the Scorpions are ranked 95th).

Several Patriots players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Tanner Payne, who threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns. The dominant performance gave him a new career- in rushing yards. Nehemiah Hester was Payne's top target, picking up 67 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Nicholas Green and he. West Carteret will venture away from home to challenge E.E. Smith at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for North Brunswick, they will host Swansboro at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully North Brunswick focused on turnovers this week as team gave up four on Friday.
