Basketball Recap: Wray Falls Despite Big Games from Adonay Gonzalez and Aaron Tena

Wray lost against Yuma back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Wray Eagles fell 69-56 to the Yuma Outlaws. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 153rd, while the Outlaws are ranked 19th).

Wray's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Aaron Tena, who posted 14 points along with seven boards and three steals, and Adonay Gonzalez, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 13 points. Tena has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Brodie Riggelman, who scored four points in addition to six assists and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Wray was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in February of 2024.

Leading Yuma to victory were Brody Sheffield and Jonathan Thomson. Sheffield earned 22 points and eight boards, while Thomson put up 11 points along with eight assists and seven rebounds. Those eight assists gave Thomson a new career-high. Alex Pensado was another key player, putting up ten points.

Wray dropped their record down to 5-12 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road. As for Yuma, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 14-2 record this season.

Wray will look to defend their home court on Friday against Frontier Academy at 4:00 p.m. Wray is facing Frontier Academy at the right time seeing as Frontier Academy is stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Yuma, they will venture away from home to square off against Wiggins at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Yuma will be looking to extend their current seven-game winning streak.
