Recap: Van Horn Eagles vs. Fort Hancock Mustangs

The Van Horn Eagles lost against the Fort Hancock Mustangs back in November of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. Van Horn took a hard 38-20 fall against Fort Hancock. Van Horn has not had much luck with Fort Hancock recently, as the team's come up short the last six times they've met.

Several Eagles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Malia Bermudez, who scored seven points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Bermudez hasn't dropped below two steals for nine straight games.

Alessandra Jimenez was her usual excellent self, scoring 22 points along with eight rebounds and seven steals for Fort Hancock. That makes it five consecutive games in which Jimenez has scored at least a third of Fort Hancock's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Valeria Coria-G., who scored no points along with six steals.

Van Horn's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 18-9. As for Fort Hancock, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 14 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 21-7 record this season.

Van Horn will face off against Marathon at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Van Horn focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 23 on Friday. As for Fort Hancock, they will take on Ropes at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Fort Hancock will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 835th, while Ropes is ranked 399th).
