Top 11 longest high school football road trips of 2014

A 45-minute trek to play a conference or league opponent doesn't sound that bad compared with a nine-hour flight to play in Ireland.

Or what if South (Anchorage, Alaska) drove to play Stephenville (Texas)? It would take them 70 hours, not to mention having to travel through a foreign country along the way.

It continues to be a growing trend for high school football teams to take cross-country, cross-region and even oversea journeys.

Here are the Top 10 longest trips taken by high school football teams, ranked by distance and not time.

11. Bishop Amat (La Puente, Calif.) at Aledo (Texas)
Location: Aledo, Texas

The Southern California school will travel to Texas to play on Friday, Sept. 5. The team will fly to Dallas on Thursday before the game. According to Bishop Amat's school site, all travel arrangements are being made individually.
10. Eastern Christian Academy (Elkton, Md.) will play three Texas teams
at Trinity (Euless, Texas)
at DeSoto (Texas) - 1,267 miles
at Coppell (Texas) -  1,261 miles

The Maryland school will travel to play three Texas schools in three straight weeks. We are still trying to confirm this, but we imagine the players and coaches will stay in Texas during those weeks.
9. Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.) vs, De La Salle (Concord, Calif.)
Location: Concord, Calif.

Byrnes will travel out to California as two national powers face off.
8. Irvine (Calif.) at Calvert Hall (Baltimore)
Location: Baltimore



Irvine will travel across the country to play Calvert Hall on Aug. 29. The Baltimore school is located just about an hour away from the Nation's Capital.
7. Four teams heading to Florida
Location: Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Complex

Fountain Valley (Calif.) vs. South Plantation (Fla.)
Dakota Ridge (Littleton, Colo.) vs. Taravella (Coral Springs, Fla.) - 1,706 miles
Eaglecrest (Centennial, Colo.) vs. St. Cloud (Fla.) - 1,552 miles
Columbine (Littleton, Colo.) vs. Melbourne Central Catholic (Melbourne, Fla.) - 1,608

6. Kamehameha (Honolulu) at Del Oro (Loomis, Calif.)
Location: Loomis, California

Kamehameha will travel to face Del Oro in the 2014 Honor Bowl. The game will kickoff at 8 p.m. on Aug. 29.

5. Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.) at Baldwin (Wailuku, Hawaii)
Location: Wailuku, Hawaii

Edison is headed to Maui to take on Baldwin High. Edison travels to Hawaii every three years. Coach Dave White told the Huntington Beach Independent, "They treat us very well and they host a big dinner for us after the game."
4. St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) at St. Louis (Honolulu)
Location: Honolulu

The nation's No. 9 team heading into the fall St. John Bosco is on the ground in Hawaii to take on St. Louis. The game is set for Aug. 22 at 10:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

3. Radford (Honolulu) at Parker (San Diego)
Location: San Diego

Radford is another Honolulu team battling a team from California. Radford will match up with small school San Diego Section power Parker.

2. South (Anchorage, Alaska) at Stephenville (Texas)
Location: Stephenville, Texas

South High School has traveled out of state before. In 2011, 2012 and 2013 they played in California. But this journey is a bit farther, as the Anchorage team travels over 3,000 miles to the Lone Star State.
1. Penn Manor (Millersville, Pa.) vs. Cedar Cliff (Camp Hill, Pa.)
Location: University College in Dublin, Ireland

Two in-state Pennsylvania rivals will play in Ireland on Friday, Aug. 29 at 2 p.m., EST. According to Pennlive, it will cost each player $3,445 for the trip to play in the Global Ireland Football Tournament.
