Softball Game Preview: Lakin Broncs vs. Stanton County Trojans

Lakin is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Monday. They will square off against the Stanton County Trojans at 4:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

On Friday, Lakin didn't have quite enough to beat Colby and fell 13-12. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Friday (ten), the Broncs still had to take the loss.

Lileah Villa made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-5. Another player making a difference was Sarah Peters, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-4.

Meanwhile, Stanton County got the win against Ness City on Thursday by a conclusive 19-3. The victory continues a trend for the Trojans in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won five in a row.

Kaydence McCleary made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. McCleary was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Kynzi Fehringer was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2024. Summer Kendrick was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.

This is the second loss in a row for Lakin and nudges their season record down to 0-2. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the defeats came by an average of only one runs. As for Stanton County, their record now sits at 2-0.

Lakin took their win against Stanton County in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 19-10. The rematch might be a little tougher for Lakin since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
