Basketball Preview: Northeast Vikings vs. Gibbs Gladiators
Having just played yesterday, the Northeast Vikings will head out on the road to face off against the Gibbs Gladiators at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Northeast will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
Northeast got their first taste of in-conference action this week and they started things off strong. They came out on top against Osceola by a score of 50-37 on Tuesday.
Northeast found their leader in sophomore Jy'Aira Washington, who went 9 for 18 on her way to 25 points and seven rebounds. Washington is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Alexa Chimner, who posted 11 points.
Northeast smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in three consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Gibbs). They blew past Pinellas Park 75-24 on Friday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.
Northeast has also been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a massive bump to their 8-11 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.2 points per game. As for Gibbs, their victory ended a five-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-11.
Northeast was dealt a bruising 61-13 defeat at the hands of Gibbs when the teams last played back in January of 2024. That contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point Northeast was down 52-3.
