Basketball Recap: Sunnyside Gets Big Victory over Higher-Ranked Reno

Sunnyside's tournament run continued when they took on Reno on Saturday. The Sunnyside Wildcats sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 54-51 win over the Reno Huskies. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Wildcats' disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 294th in California, while the Huskies are ranked seventh in Nevada).

It was another big night for Malachi Barnes, who posted 20 points. Tanner Wilson was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Several Huskies players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Johnavin Evans, who went 8 of 14 on his way to 17 points and five assists. Evans is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Crew Higgins, who went 5 of 10 en route to 14 points and eight rebounds.

Sunnyside's win bumped their record up to 9-5. As for Reno, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 8-3.

Sunnyside and Pleasant Grove will round out the year against one another at at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Sunnyside is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.9 points per game this season. As for Reno, they will be taking part in a tournament against Ridgeview at 2:00 p.m. on Monday. Reno also hasn't been messing around on offense: they've averaged 55.2 points per game.
