Basketball Recap: Trent Haag and Maddex Moreno Secure Win for West Elk

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Oxford, West Elk was happy to have turned things around on Thursday. They took down the Flinthills Mustangs 50-36. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Patriots also won the last time the pair played back in February of 2024.

West Elk was led to victory by Maddex Moreno and Trent Haag. Moreno went 8 for 13 en route to 20 points along with eight boards and three steals, while Haag went 7 of 9 on his way to 15 points and seven rebounds. Moreno's afternoon made it ten games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Garett Usry was another key player, putting up nine points.

West Elk is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a massive bump to their 5-6 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.0 points per game. As for Flinthills, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-6.

West Elk will take on Argonia in a tournament on Saturday. That game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Carson Vineyard and Moreno. As for Flinthills, they will venture away from home to challenge Central at 7:00 p.m. on January 31st.
