Burke is 0-3 against Elkhorn South since October of 2022 but things could change on Thursday. The Bulldogs will take on the Storm at 7:00 p.m. This will be Burke's first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
Burke made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Fremont, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Bulldogs fell just short of the Tigers by a score of 28-25 on Friday. While the Bulldogs had to settle for second, they closed the game well in the third quarter, where they outscored the Tigers 18-3.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Jasiah Summerfield, who threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns. Dayton Collins was Summerfield's top target, picking up 84 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.
Meanwhile, Elkhorn South put another one in the bag on Thursday to keep their perfect season alive. They took their matchup with ease, bagging a 63-6 win over Omaha South. With the Storm ahead 42-0 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
Burke better keep an eye on Jaydon Sutko. He was instrumental in Elkhorn South's win, rushing for 114 yards and two scores on only six carries. Sutko is crushing it when it comes to rushing yards: he's rushed for at least 111 every time he's taken the field this season. Another pass catcher making a difference was Gavin Siemek, who picked up 106 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Elkhorn South was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 225 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 197 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.
Elkhorn South didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off five passes before the game was over. It was a group effort, with five picking up one apiece. Nathan Zehr got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Elkhorn South's victory bumped their record up to 5-0. As for Burke, they now have a losing record of 2-3.
Thursday's game will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Carnell Dangerfield and Sutko. Dangerfield just won't slow down this season and has averaged 84.8 rushing yards per game. Sutko has been a dominant force too and has run in 14 touchdowns while averaging 178.4 rushing yards per game.
Burke took a serious blow against Elkhorn South in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, falling 69-0. Thankfully for the Bulldogs, Gavin Shanahan (who rushed for 148 yards and three TDs while picking up 7.8 yards per carry, and also threw for 16 yards and one touchdown) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
