Preview: Fairfax Lions vs. West Springfield Spartans

Fairfax has enjoyed a four-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will challenge the West Springfield Spartans at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Fairfax focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Thursday.

Last Thursday, Fairfax came up short against Alexandria City and fell 51-43. While losing is never fun, Fairfax can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 63rd, while Alexandria City is ranked 17th).

Despite their loss, Fairfax saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Cam Love, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. Love has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Ronier Peters, who scored 11 points along with five assists and five steals.

Even though they lost, Fairfax were working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Alexandria City only racked up nine assists.

Meanwhile, West Springfield lost to Alexandria City at home by a decisive 63-48 margin on Monday. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for West Springfield in their matchups with Alexandria City: they've now lost seven in a row.

Fairfax's record is now 10-5. As for West Springfield, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-9 record this season.

Everything came up roses for Fairfax against West Springfield in their previous meeting back in December of 2023 as the squad secured a 74-43 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Fairfax since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
