Football Recap: Newton Skates Past Heritage with Ease

Newton won the last time they faced Heritage and things went their way on Friday too. The Rams took their matchup with ease, bagging a 54-13 victory over the Patriots. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Rams' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 30th, while the Patriots are ranked 268th).

Newton's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kevin Hartsfield led the charge by rushing for 104 yards and a pair of TDs on only nine carries. Hartsfield has become a key player for the Rams: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least 80 rushing yards, but 1-2 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Derrick Miller, who picked up 104 receiving yards and two scores.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Newton was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 407 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Heritage only rushed for 140.

Newton's defense stepped up as well, laying out Jaycob Jones six times. Tyrell McKnight was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two sacks himself. He also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with seven.

Despite the loss, Heritage still got an impressive performance from Joshua Taylor, who rushed for 65 yards and one touchdown.

Newton is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. As for Heritage, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7.

Newton has already played their next game, a 59-3 win against Rockdale County on the 25th. As for Heritage, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 41-6 defeat against Archer on the 24th.
