Baseball Recap: Powell County Comes Up Short

Powell County came into this matchup off a tough ten-run defeat on Tuesday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of the Mason County Royals by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday. The Pirates haven't had much luck with the Royals recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.

Ethan Wireman was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. That's the fewest earned runs he has allowed since back in April of 2024.

On the hitting side, Powell County saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lacy Dicken, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Dylan Carter also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Powell County's record now sits at 1-8. As for Mason County, their victory bumped their record up to 3-4.

Coming up, Powell County will head out on the road to face off against Spencer County at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. The Bears' pitching crew has only allowed 3.8 runs per game this season, so the Pirates' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Mason County, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Carlisle at 3:00 p.m.
