League recap: Cherokee Trail tops Smoky Hill to extend winning streak

Cherokee Trail extended the longest winning streak in 5A Centennial this week by beating Smoky Hill, 49-0. The win marks fourth in a row for the the Cougars.

The Buffaloes fell to Cherokee Trail 49-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Monte Thelen's team's dynamic duo of Aric Johnson and Izaiah Lottie proved to be unstoppable against Smoky Hill, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Johnson threw for 106 yards and 2 touchdowns and Lottie had 62 yards receiving.

Kolten Johnson made the biggest impact on defense this week as Grandview bested Eaglecrest. The 6-foot-1 senior recorded 2 fumbles and racked up 2.0 sacks.

Milo Hall provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Cherry Creek defeated Overland. Hall's key target this week was Tyus Carter, who caught 2 passes for 36 yards.

Overland's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Trailblazers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Austin Conway has thrown for 1,296 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, while Khalil Jenkins has 20 catches for 446 yards. Conway also leads the league in rushing with 636 yards.

The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between the Cougars and the Bruins. Cherokee Trail enters the game ranked fifth in the state, while Cherry Creek ranks ninth.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Cougars take on Dave Logan's team. Cherokee Trail has allowed 40 points this season, while the Bruins have given up 50. The Cougars allowed 0 points last week as they beat Justin Hoffman's team.

The Trailblazers made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,822 from 3,962. The advance stemmed from a 20-6 victory over Overland last week.
