Basketball Recap: Maria Lyde's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Greeneville over Cocke County

If Greeneville was riding high fresh off their 54-15 takedown of Volunteer last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Greeneville Greene Devils fell just short of the Cocke County Fighting Cocks by a score of 55-52 on Friday. While losing is never fun, the Greene Devils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee basketball rankings (they are ranked 63rd, while the Fighting Cocks are ranked 14th).

Greeneville's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Maria Lyde, who went 5-for-12 en route to 13 points in addition to eight boards and five assists. Lyde is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Kyla Jobe, who went 8-for-18 on her way to 20 points.

Greeneville's defeat dropped their record down to 17-10. As for Cocke County, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 15 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 24-6 record this season.

Coming up, Greeneville will square off against West Ridge at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Greeneville is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.6 points per game this season. Cocke County does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
