Basketball Recap: Cape Hatteras Comes Up Short

After flying high against Hobgood Charter last Thursday, Cape Hatteras came back down to earth. The Cape Hatteras Hurricanes fell 54-46 to the Columbia Wildcats on Tuesday. The Hurricanes were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Wildcats earlier this season, when they won 52-45.

Despite the loss, Cape Hatteras saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Paizley Schultz went 7-for-12 to rack up 23 points and eight rebounds. Schultz has become a key player for Cape Hatteras: the team is 5-1 when she posts at least 15 points, but 5-7 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Gracie Wyatt, who went 5-for-8 on her way to 10 points and five boards.

Among those leading the charge was Riely Taylor, who went 6-for-11 en route to 17 points. Those 17 points gave her a new career-high.

Cape Hatteras' defeat dropped their record down to 10-8. As for Columbia, their record is now 8-10.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cape Hatteras will take on Ocracoke at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Columbia, they will face off against Mattamuskeet at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Columbia is facing Mattamuskeet at the right time seeing as Mattamuskeet is stuck on a 14-game losing streak.
