Softball Game Preview: George Washington Prep Generals vs. Maywood Academy Nighthawks

The George Washington Prep Generals are taking a road trip to challenge the Maywood Academy Nighthawks at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams are strolling into their matchups after big wins in their previous games.

Maywood Academy will be up against a hot George Washington Prep squad: the team just extended their winning streak to three. George Washington Prep put the hurt on Magnolia Science Academy Carson with a sharp 22-6 win on Wednesday. Considering the Generals have won four contests by more than 14 runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Aracely Gonzales made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That home run was her first of the season.

In other batting news, George Washington Prep let Holland Allen and Emily Varela run wild. Allen went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI, while Varela went 4-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most hits Allen has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was April Tovar, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3.

George Washington Prep was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .567. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Maywood Academy, who bounced back after a loss on the road on March 10th. They were the clear victors by a 13-2 margin over Animo De La Hoya on Thursday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Nighthawks as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Maywood Academy's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 3-5. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.7 runs on average over those games. As for George Washington Prep, their record is now 4-2.
