Preview: Estacado Matadors vs. Bowie Bears
The Estacado Matadors will be playing in front of their home fans against the Bowie Bears at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Estacado put the finishing touches on their seventh blowout victory of the season on Friday. They blew past Lake View 63-0 at home. Given Estacado's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 180th, while Lake View is ranked 954th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Estacado's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Dj Johnson, who threw for 104 yards and three touchdowns while completing 100% of his passes, and also picked up 50 receiving yards. James Bozeman was another key contributor, rushing for 95 yards and a touchdown.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Estacado's defense and their seven sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Mehki Williams and Kei?sean Harris who racked up six sacks between them.
Despite a strong season so far, Bowie has seen their luck take a bit of a downturn recently. They suffered a rough 66-42 defeat at the hands of Riverside on Friday.
Estacado's victory bumped their season record to 8-2 while Bowie's defeat dropped theirs to 7-3.
Friday's match might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Estacado has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 282.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Bowie struggles in that department as they've been averaging 236.6 per game. It's looking like Friday's match might have some serious battles in the trenches. Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
Everything came up roses for Estacado against Bowie when the teams last played back in November of 2022 as the team secured a 54-7 victory. Does Estacado have another victory up their sleeve, or will Bowie turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
