Riverside is 1-9 against Covington since April of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Pirates will host the Buccs at 5:30 p.m. Riverside is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
Riverside couldn't beat Milton-Union on Monday even though they stacked four runs on them in the sixth inning. The Pirates took a 10-5 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bulldogs. The Pirates have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Miah Carman made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Covington made easy work of Troy on Saturday and carried off a 14-4 win. Considering the Buccs have won nine matches by more than nine runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Cassidy Iddings spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on five hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Elizabeth Coblentz, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Emalyn Johnson, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
Covington was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .560. They are 11-2 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Covington is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten games. That's provided a massive bump to their 16-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.3 runs over those games. As for Riverside, their loss dropped their record down to 12-10.
Covington's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Riverside has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.2 hits per game. It's a different story for Covington, though, as they've been averaging 9.8 hits. Given Riverside's sizable advantage in that area, the Buccs will need to find a way to close that gap.
Riverside came out on top in a nail-biter against Covington when the teams last played back in April, sneaking past 7-6. Will the Pirates repeat their success, or do the Buccs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
