Softball Recap: McGuffey Comes Up Short

After flying high against Steel Valley last Monday, McGuffey came back down to earth. The Highlanders fell just short of the Keystone Oaks Golden Eagles by a score of 6-4 on Wednesday. The Highlanders were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Golden Eagles apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Makenna Crothers spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, McGuffey saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kali Franks, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. Another was Maura Janovich, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

McGuffey's defeat dropped their record down to 5-4. As for Keystone Oaks, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-5 record this season.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: McGuffey beat Keystone Oaks by a score of 11-6 later that day.
