Basketball Game Preview: Tonawanda Timberwolves vs. Medina Mustangs

The Tonawanda Timberwolves are taking a road trip to challenge the Medina Mustangs at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Tonawanda has struggled recently with four defeats in a row, while Medina will arrive with eight straight victories.

On Monday, Tonawanda ended up a good deal behind Cleveland Hill and lost 54-35. The game marked the Timberwolves' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

While Medina didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-12), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They skirted past Eden 56-54. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Mustangs' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 115th, while the Raiders are ranked 378th).

Tonawanda better focus on containing Avion Johnson and Jerrell Nealy as the pair were huge in Medina's win. Johnson dropped a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards, while Nealy dropped a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds. That's the most boards Nealy has posted since back in December of 2024. Carlos Doval was another key player, putting up three points and six assists.

Medina smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 13 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Tonawanda's loss dropped their record down to 1-4. As for Medina, their win bumped their record up to 8-0.

Tonawanda couldn't quite get it done against Medina when the teams last played back in February of 2020 as they fell 68-60. Can the Timberwolves avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
