League recap: Dominguez breaks off league-leading run for Volcano Vista

5A District 1 recap September 24, 2013

Volcano Vista's Ibra Dominguez rumbled for the longest rushing play in 5A District 1 this season in his game against Moriarty last week. Dominguez's team topped the Fighting Pintos as he sprinted for 79 yards on the play and finished with 157 in all.

Fans got a thrill when Sam Garcia and Jacob Smith connected against Highland. The connection was good for 86 yards, the longest such play in the league this season.

Cibola's dynamic duo of Derek Martinez and Smith proved to be unstoppable against the Hornets, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Martinez threw for 236 yards and 3 touchdowns and Smith had 159 yards receiving. Blair Manly helped Cibola's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 140 yards.

The Cougars' dynamic duo of Martinez and Smith proved tough for Highland to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.

Dominico Chavez was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 238 yards on 37 carries as Volcano Vista defeated Derek Maestas' team.

Martinez put up the best numbers through the air as Rod Williams' team beat the Hornets.

Smith was the best wideout in 5A District 1 this week as the Cougars beat Highland.

Chavez was a beast in the backfield as Chad Wallin's team bested Moriarty.

He went 9-14 with 0 interception.

Manly made the biggest impact on defense this week as Cibola bested the Hornets. The 6-foot-2 junior.

6-foot-3 quarterback Easton Bruere of Rio Rancho is the league leader in passing yards this season with 697. He has also thrown 10 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Elijah Winfield. The Cibola star has 5 catches for 188 yards.

Cleveland extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Clovis, 41-21. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.
