Melbourne had to kick off their season on the road on Monday, but they showed no ill effects. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the New Smyrna Beach Barracudas, sneaking past 4-2. This was payback for the Bulldogs, who suffered a 2-0 loss the last time these two teams met.
Melbourne got a great performance from Seth MonteLeon as he tossed six innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits.
At the plate, Jayden Santos was excellent, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Those two runs gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Eddie Verbilla, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one double.
New Smyrna Beach's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.
Coincidentally, Melbourne and New Smyrna Beach will both be playing Merritt Island the next time they take the field. The Barracudas will head out to face the Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while the Bulldogs will head out to face them at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
