Basketball Recap: Bowie Comes Up Short

After flying high against Tornillo last Friday, Bowie came back down to earth. The Bowie Bears took a 51-40 hit to the loss column at the hands of the El Dorado Aztecs on Thursday. The Bears were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Aztecs apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in November of 2021.

When it comes to explaining why Bowie lost, don't look at Johan Camacho. Despite the final result, he almost dropped a double-double on 22 points and nine rebounds. The matchup was Camacho's 12th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Joe Rodriguez, who posted 13 points.

Leading El Dorado to victory were Jacob Villalobos and Eli Velasquez. Villalobos went 6 of 11 on his way to 13 points, while Velasquez went 5 of 7 on his way to 15 points and five rebounds. Those five boards gave Velasquez a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jason Montoya, who put up six points and three steals.

Bowie has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.9 points per game. As for El Dorado, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 9-10.

Bowie didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 77-41 win against Santa Teresa on the 27th. As for El Dorado, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 57-49 victory against Franklin on the 27th.
