Softball Recap: Hamburg Takes a Loss

Hamburg had lost three straight at home, but on Monday they dropped down to 6-7 to make it four. They took a 5-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the McGehee Owls. The game marked the Lions' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

MJ Esquivel spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and three unearned) runs on five hits.

At the plate, Mary Gwin was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with one home run and two stolen bases.

As for McGehee, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.8 runs over those games.

On McGehee's side, Kynleigh White made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. White has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Avery Abbott, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one double. Madison Carpenter also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Coming up, Hamburg will challenge Star City at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bulldogs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.31 runs per game on average), something the Lions will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for McGehee, they will take on Dumas at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
