Kirby is on a six-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Overton is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Cougars will welcome the Wolverines at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Kirby will bounce into Wednesday's contest after beating Memphis Central, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Cougars sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-7 win over the Warriors on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Cougars have posted since March 19, 2024.
The team relied heavily on Elijah Cody, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Samuel Chavarria, who scored two runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Kirby always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .567. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .528 or higher in five consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Overton got the win against Kingsbury on Tuesday by a conclusive 15-4. The Wolverines might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven games by nine runs or more this season.
Daiquan Dixon made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-2. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Overton got a massive performance out of Marquel Brooks, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. The Wolverines are undefeated when Brooks posts two or more stolen bases, but 3-4-1 otherwise. Nehemiah Diggs was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-2.
Overton is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-4-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.4 runs over those games. As for Kirby, the victory got them back to even at 6-6.
Wednesday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Kirby has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .622. However, it's not like Overton struggles in that department as they've averaged .548. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Kirby's way against Overton in their previous meeting back in March, as Kirby made off with a 22-5 win. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wolverines turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
