Basketball Recap: Palmetto Scholars Academy Takes a Loss

Palmetto Scholars Academy was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They fell 70-58 to the Charleston Math & Science Riptide. While losing is never fun, the Phoenix can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 274th, while the Riptide are ranked 97th).

When it comes to explaining why Palmetto Scholars Academy lost, don't look at Jesse Murray. Despite the final result, he went 6 for 8 on his way to 15 points in addition to five assists and four steals. Murray has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Maddox Austin, who went 5 of 12 en route to 12 points and six rebounds.

It was another big night for Ben Gilliard, who posted 27 points and seven rebounds for Charleston Math & Science. Those 27 points gave Gilliard a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Zion King, who put up ten points in addition to seven assists and five boards.

Palmetto Scholars Academy's loss dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Charleston Math & Science, their victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-2.

Palmetto Scholars Academy wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 54-47 win against Charleston Collegiate on the 8th. As for Charleston Math & Science, they will host Lowcountry Leadership at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
