Basketball Recap: Midlands STEM Charter Starts Season with Loss on the Road

Midlands STEM Charter had to start their season on the road on Monday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They fell 54-42 to the Richard Winn Academy Eagles. The Mavericks have struggled against the Eagles recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

Midlands STEM Charter's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cole Talbert, who posted ten points and three steals. Talbert is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed three or more in each of the last five games he's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayden Cali, who put up seven points in addition to seven boards and three steals.

Bennett Nicholson was a one-man wrecking crew For Richard Winn Academy. as he almost dropped a triple-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. Walker Blackwelder was another key player, putting up 13 points and six boards.

Looking ahead, Midlands STEM Charter won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Lamar at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. This will be the Mavericks' first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for Richard Winn Academy, they also won't have to wait long for more action: they'll challenge Grace Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
