The Springfield Spartans will challenge the St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Springfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
Springfield had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the six-run drubbing they dealt Cloverleaf on Wednesday. The Spartans were the clear victors by a 7-1 margin over the Colts. The win continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Colts: they've now won five in a row.
Joey Klein spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on six hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Bre Ruggiero, who went 2-for-4 with two triples, two RBI, and one run. Melaena Martin was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Springfield hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in seven consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, St. Vincent-St. Mary came into Wednesday's game having lost four straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They had just enough and edged out Padua Franciscan 8-7 on Wednesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Fighting Irish have posted since April 16th.
Avarie Mays and Mackenzie McFarland did most of the damage at the plate: Mays went 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI, while McFarland went 3-for-4 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most runs McFarland has posted over her last 11 contests. Another player making a difference was Kennedy Brophy, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.
St. Vincent-St. Mary's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-10. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.7 runs on average over those games. As for Springfield, their win bumped their record up to 13-5.
Thursday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Springfield hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .352. However, it's not like St. Vincent-St. Mary struggles in that department as they've averaged .335. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
