Kansas: Simons Storms to School Records at Relays

As she approached the starting blocks at last week’s Shawnee Mission North Relays, Shawnee Mission North junior track and field standout Storm Simons was nowhere to be found on the Kansas track and field leader board in the 400 meters.

But she won the race in a state-leading time of 57.24-seconds and eclipsed a school record that had decorated the Indian record book for almost three decades.

She did it all over again 25 minutes later in the 300 hurdles, winning with a school record time of 44.96. Simons, last season’s Class 6A 300 hurdle champion, still trails Concordia’s Alex Muff in the latest standings.

While she was expected to have success in those two events at the relays, Simons did surprise in the 200 meters with a third-place time of 25.96 and helped the 4x400 relay team to a third-place finish. Before Friday, Simons had not run the open 200.



“I’m beyond pleased,” Simons told the Shawnee Dispatch. “I never expected to do that in the 400, and the 300 hurdles was awesome. I really enjoyed the 200, too, and the (relay) was nice.”

Simons rise to the top of the state’s 400-meter leader board highlighted five moves to No. 1 in the latest girls standings; Belle Plaine’s Amanda Callaway now leads the state’s 800-meter runners (2:16.90)…Mackenzie Maki of Wichita Kapaun Mount Carmel sits atop the 1,600-meter leader board (5:01.40)…Shawnee Heights’ Abreanna Parker is the leader in the long jump (19-8 1/4)…Olathe East moved ahead of Leavenworth and into first place in the 4x100 relay (48.05).

In the boys standings, Leavenworth’s Jacob Rowe advanced four spots in the latest boys triple jump standings with a state leading leap of 46-feet, 7 3/4-inches, while Shawnee Mission South’s Johannes Swanepoel surpassed season long javelin leader Matt Byers, of Wichita East, with a toss of 216-2.
