I Section II recap Oct. 9, 2012
Hamilton extended the longest winning streak in I Section II this week by beating Desert Vista, 23-13. This was the team's fifth consecutive win.
Highland and Desert Mountain played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Highland eventually emerging with a 34-32 victory. Ryan McCord ran for 209 yards and caught one passes for six yards in the win.
Chandler's dynamic duo of Darell Garretson and Mitch McCulley proved tough for Dobson to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Garretson threw for 409 yards and three touchdowns and McCulley had 155 yards receiving. Dionte Sykes helped Chandler's passing attack out by catching four balls for 103 yards.
Juan Giraldo made the biggest impact on defense this week as Mesquite lost to Chaparral. The junior pulled down two interceptions.
JJ Husar was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 18 carries, he ran for 247 yards as Desert Ridge topped the Mustangs. Teammate Danny Siaumau added to the ground attack by rushing for 97 yards.
6-foot-0 quarterback Garretson of Chandler is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1919. He has also thrown 19 touchdowns. On the ground, Buena's Dominique Drake has rushed for 1346 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Nate Phillips. The Basha star has 49 catches for 805 yards.
Going into this week's game against Perry, Basha's Zach Werlinger needs 96 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season. Accruing a total of 22 touchdowns this year, Werlinger has thrown for 1904 yards with seven interceptions.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Corona del Sol takes on Shaun Aguano's team. As it stands, the Aztecs are in 10th, while the Wolves are in fifth.
Tucson led the league in scoring this week after putting up 53 points on Santa Rita.
