Mt. Carmel hasn't had much luck against Poway recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Mt. Carmel Sundevils will take on the Poway Titans at 6:30 p.m. Mt. Carmel's pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so Poway's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Mt. Carmel took a eight-run defeat the last time they faced off against Rancho Bernardo, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Mt. Carmel came out on top in a nail-biter against Rancho Bernardo on Monday, sneaking past 6-5. The Sundevils' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Bryce Miller made a splash while hitting and pitching. He pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March of 2024. He was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run marked the first that he launched this season.
Miller wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Nate Godbold, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2. Godbold is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Camden Graver also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, Poway suffered their closest loss since April 12, 2024 on Wednesday. They fell just short of La Jolla Country Day by a score of 5-3. The Titans have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Parker Smith made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI.
The win made it two in a row for Mt. Carmel and bumps their season record up to 2-3. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Poway, they now have a losing record of 1-2.
Mt. Carmel's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's match. Mt. Carmel has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Poway, though, as they've been averaging only 1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Mt. Carmel continue to outrun the ball?
Mt. Carmel couldn't quite get it done against Poway when the teams last played back in March of 2019 as they fell 4-0. Can Mt. Carmel avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
