Basketball Recap: Windham Takes a Loss

Windham lost against St. Bernard two weeks ago, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Windham Whippets came up short against the St. Bernard Saints, falling 83-58. While losing is never fun, the Whippets can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut basketball rankings (they are ranked 74th, while the Saints are ranked second).

Despite the loss, Windham saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Anden Gonzalez en route to 20 points. Gonzalez also set a new season-high mark in shooting accuracy with 69%. Alexander Pomo was another key player, putting up seven points and seven boards.

Leading St. Bernard to victory were Amyre Gray and Curtis Marshall. Gray dropped a triple-double with 28 points, ten assists, and ten steals, while Marshall on his way to 27 points in addition to six rebounds and five steals. The matchup was Gray's seventh in a row with at least 18 points. Brevin Gonzales also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Windham's defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 11-10. The slump could be explained by some tough opposition over that stretch, namely St. Bernard, Killingly, and St. Bernard. As for St. Bernard, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 17-3.

Windham does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for St. Bernard, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 78-60 victory against Killingly on the 23rd.
