Baseball Recap: Wheeling Central Catholic Takes Down Philip Barbour in a Playoff Battle

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Wheeling Central Catholic walked away with it. Everything went their way against the Philip Barbour Colts on Saturday as they made off with a 7-0 win. Considering the Maroon Knights have won 14 contests by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Not much got past Steven Brodegard, who gave up just two hits and racked up seven Ks to keep Philip Barbour off the board. Brodegard has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Gary Hatfield, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Braxton Billick, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Wheeling Central Catholic was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .407. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Wheeling Central Catholic is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Philip Barbour, they moved to 23-7 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak.
