Basketball Recap: Covenant Day Takes a Loss

Covenant Day lost to Cannon back in February of 2025 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Lions fell 63-59 to the Cougars. The Lions have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

When it comes to explaining why Covenant Day lost, don't look at Douglas Smith. Despite the final result, he went 7-for-13 on his way to 18 points along with seven rebounds and four blocks. Micah Huffman was another key player, shooting 46% from the field en route to 16 points.

Sean Nix was his usual excellent self, going 9-for-18 to rack up 32 points in addition to eight boards and six assists for Cannon. The game was Nix's 15th in a row with at least 15 points. Another player making a difference was DJ Rogers, who shot 55% from the field on his way to 13 points and six rebounds.

Covenant Day's loss dropped their record down to 8-15. As for Cannon, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-11 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Covenant Day will host Charlotte Country Day School at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Lions' defense better be ready for this one: the Buccaneers have averaged an impressive 60.1 points per game this season. As for Cannon, they will be playing at home against Charlotte Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cougars will need to watch out since the Knights have now posted at least 55 points in their last 13 contests.
