Alyssa Herrera was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off eight hits (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April of 2024. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-6 with one stolen base and one RBI. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played.
In other batting news, Mathis got a massive performance out of Angelina Hernandez, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 4-for-5. The dominant performance also gave Hernandez a new career-high in triples (two). Another player making a difference was Marivel Martinez, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles.
Mathis always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .583. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Aransas Pass only posted an OBP of .207.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Taft). They put the hurt on West Oso with a sharp 19-4 victory on Friday. The win was nothing new for the Greyhounds as they're now sitting on three straight.
Josette Aparicio made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up four earned runs off seven hits. She also tossed four walks, marking her first of the season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances.
In other batting news, Juliana Alaniz was a standout: she scored two runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-5. Ansleigh Soliz was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
Mathis' victory bumped their record up to 9-6-1. As for Taft, their win bumped their record up to 12-7.
Mathis came out on top in a nail-biter against Taft when the teams last played back in April of 2024, sneaking past 7-6. Does Mathis have another victory up their sleeve, or will Taft turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
